It’s Saturday night and I should be out on the town in Manchester, New Hampshire (which is an inside joke with myself as I’m still learning to appreciate the value of NH after recently relocating from San Diego). Instead of frolicking on Elm Street, I’m happily abusing the word “geek” and spending my time online with my super hot date, Apple iBook.

Some of the simple joys of my online life include purusing craigslist and reading up on the latest “missed connections” and personals from people in my area. I love craigslist and it took everything in me not to walk up to Craig Newmark at the Community 2.0 Conference this past March and personally thank him for helping me find one job, two apartments, a new sofa, a book club I never attended, and countless moments of amusement.

Somewhat of a hopeless romantic (although I hate romantic comedies and anything with Jennifer Lopez in it), I get the most pleasure out of the “missed connections” section. Of course I only read the m4w section, but still I think it’s so cute that guys are willing to put themselves out there like that. Wouldn’t it be cool if one day one of those posts was about me (hmm…perhaps that would mean more nights away from my iBook)? Anyhow I love reading them all the same. And actually there have been a few that have made think, “is he talking about me?” Maybe that’s why they’re so fun to read, you just never know what you’ll find.

If I’m in the mood for pure comedy I can’t avoid the guilty pleasure of the personals “men seeking women” section. Let me just say that 98% of the time I completely avoid “casual encounters” and “miscellaneous romance” because some of those posts are just…well…it’s truly amazing what people will put out there when given the tools to do so.

In the spirit of 100% honesty, I should admit that I can’t bring myself to ever respond to a craigslist personal. It just feels taboo. I hope this doesn’t make me a hypocrite.

In terms of humor though, I really enjoy it when someone gets offended and starts a follow-up post that gets everyone involved. Those are the best. A few days ago, a somewhat shallow specimen of the opposite sex referred to New Hampshire as Cow Hampshire; that really got the crowd going. It’s like Maury Pauvich (sp?) meets Match.com, watch out.

Guilty pleasures and a fun Saturday night await.
